What is the title of the vehicle?

Title of the vehicle informs the potential buyer if the car had any non-removable damage which may potentially influence its performance. This is why you should always check if the vehicle has a title.

Titles are officially assigned by the state agencies and they should be visible in the vehicle documentation. Privately owned companies are not allowed to assign car titles.

Titles may differ depending on the state; below you will see a list of the most common ones:

- recovered

- written-off

- salvaged

- lemon (to be bought back by the manufacturer)

- flooded

- reconstructed

Different states use different methodologies when assigning a title.

The same titles may have different meanings in different states.

Vehicle is reconstructed / reconstructible?

The car has been recovered and renewed using new or second-hand parts. In this case the owner or the reconstructor are obliged by the DMV to declare what repairs or modifications have been performed. It is illegal not to do so. Vehicles with this title also have to undergo safety inspection before they are deemed roadworthy.

Vehicle is salvaged?

A salvaged vehicle is a vehicle which has been very seriously damaged, or even damaged to the extent which makes it impossible to repair. In such cases, the insurer declares a “total loss”. The insurer is obliged to apply for a Certificate of Salvage. If the owner keeps the vehicle, it is their duty to apply for the certificate.
